Mount St. Helens Disproves a Young Earth (and so can you)
This video addresses a young earth creationist argument that has been in circulation for several decades. The argument has to do with a rock sample collected in 1992 by Dr. Steve Austin from a recently formed lava dome on Mt. St. Helens. Austin sent the rock to a radiometric dating lab and the age reported to him ranged from 340,000 to 2.8 million years. The young earth creationist argument is that these obviously incorrect dates invalidate the dating method and by extension, all radiometric dating methods. The video points out that some responses given to the young earth argument have a semblance of truth but are ultimately incorrect. The main problems reported in the video are that Austin didn't account for the mixed ages of minerals in his sample, failed to propagate the analytical errors in his ages, and sent his sample to a lab that used the analytical method that was most likely to yield imprecise results.
Geology vs. Flood Geology With Petroleum Geologist Steve Mitchell
This video is an interview conducted by Erika (a.k.a., Gutsick Gibbon) with (conventional) geologist Steve Mitchell. Mitchell gives a presentation which is based on his book A Texas-Size Challenge to Young Earth Creation and Flood Geology to explain how the complex sedimentary geology of New Mexico and Texas cannot be explained by flood geology. Mitchell provides several specific examples of sections of the sedimentary record and explains why they are incompatible with the predictions of flood geology. During the interview, Mitchell points out that he is a Christian and doesn't see a conflict between faith and science.
